Library Reading
Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald
Gordon MacDonald brings meaningful answers to questions with which we all struggle. Is there genuine inner life, a private, inner world that each of us possesses?
Born to Buy by Juliet B. Schor
"We worry about so many dangers to our children - drugs, perverts, bullies - but seldom notice the biggest menace of all: the multibillion-dollar marketing effort aimed at turning the kids into oversexed, status-obsessed, attention-deficient little consumers. Juliet Schor's Born to Buy is a brilliant expose and call to action." Barbara Eherenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed.
Traveling Light: Modern Meditations on St. Paul's Letter of Freedom
by Eugene H Peterson
"There are moments when a single truth cries out for proclamation..." "For me one of these moments came in the early 1980s...when I looked at the people I was living with as a pastor. I realized how unfree they were. They were overcome with anxieties in the face of rising inflation. They were pessimistic about the prospects for justice and peace  in a world bristling with sophisticated weapons systems and nuclear devices. I became determined to seek ways in which I could awaken a hunger and thirst for the free life among people who had lost an appetite for it, and then, having awakened the appetite, to find the food and drink that would satisfy it. Freedom is not an abstraction, and it is not a think. It is a gift and a skill."
Days of Grace by Arthue Ashe and Arnold Rampersad
A remarkable and inspiring memoir by a remarkable and inspiring human being. Arthur Ashe, embodiment of courage and grace in every aspect of his life, from his triumphs as a great tennis champion and his determined social activism to his ordeal in the face of death, a casualty of AIDS.
By My Hands by Alton Gansky
Alton Gansky brings an eclectic background to his writing, having worked in such fields as accounting, advertising, and architecture. Today he is the senior pastor of High Desert Baptist Church in Phelan, CA where he resides with his wife and three children.
Benjamin Rush: Patriot and Physician by Alyn Brodsky
While Benjamin Rush appears often and meaningfully in biographies about John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, this legendary man is presented as little more than an historical footnote. Yet he was a propelling force in what culminated in the Declaration of Independence, or which he was a cosigner. Rush was an early agitator for independence, a member of the First Continental Congress, and one of the leading surgeons of the American Revolution. He is considered the Father of American Psychiatry, a foremost social reformer in such areas as medical teaching, treatment of the mentally ill, international prevention of yellow fever, establishment of colleges and medical schools, implementation of improved higher education for women, and much more.
Dark Nights of the Soul: A Guide to Finding Your Way Through Life's Ordeals by Thomas Moore
Every human journey is filled with emotional tunnels: the loss of a loved one or end of a relationship, aging and illness, career disappointments, or just an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction with life. Society tends to view these "dark nights" in clinical terms as obstacles to be overcome as quickly as possible. But Thomas Moore's extensive career as a psychologist and theologian has taught him that honoring these periods of fragility as periods of incubation and opportunities to delve into the soul's deepest needs can provide healing and a new understanding of life's meaning.
